Well known as a Sloe bush when seen growing in our natural hedgerows, this Blackthorn hedging makes a good, strong and reliable screen. Covered in white flowers in late spring, then turning to the black rounded berries in autumn. The foliage is dense and the branches are thorny, making it an excellent protection or deterrent hedge too. Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting Distance: 25cm (10). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge). For instant impact try one of one of our innovative trough-grown hedges! Each trough contains a 1 metre length of pre-planted hedging to create a mature looking hedge from the very moment it is planted. With well-established root systems, youll find that trough-grown hedges are correctly spaced, making them much easier to plant. The healthy framework of branches are nicely knitted together, and can be trimmed to the ideal height immediately after planting. Better still, you can plant them all year round, so long as adequate irrigation is provided. If planting is delayed then trough-grown hedges can be easily maintained until you are ready, without the need for heeling in.Useful links: How to plant hedging Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. Try the petals steeped in wine for an extra zing to your drink, or crystallise them for use as baking decoration or that extra sweet treat. For more details about edible flowers click here.
